about

Memory Glands is an extension or outlet of a pool of internet based collectives going back 15 years or more.
An extremely prominent member and veteran among this hivemind was an Alaskan man named Salvatorin.
Unfortunately Salvatorin, real name Philip Glowa, left this reality at the beginning of 2021. We miss him dearly.
In January of 2021 Salv had been digging around in old hardrives, finding ancient music he'd made and posting them up for anyone who'd care to listen. I had suggested to him we do a cassette on memory glands of Brickworks, an album he made between the ages of 13 - 15 and he was enthusiastic about the idea.
The bonus cassette in this package is another zip he had been sharing at the time labelled 'random ancient salvs'. As far as I am aware these are tracks he'd submitted to online compilations over the years.
Along with these cassettes, this release is accompanied by a zine celebrating salv's life. Including his distinctive digital artwork, pics of the man himself and a heartfelt introduction written by Mr Fred McGriff:

'In 2013 Philip Glowa told me, with no small sense of urgency, that he felt like a tree was growing out of his head, and that it was likely a baobab tree. I knew there wasn’t, and I knew he knew there wasn’t, but with Phil, often the impetus of the conversation was the possibility behind an idea, however improbable, absurd, and distantly detached from reality it was. If you signaled interest, he would take the idea and run with it, weaving truth and fiction together like a skilled craftsman wise beyond his years. If you were lucky enough to keep up or, perhaps on an extremely creative day, return volley with thoughts and ideas previously unexplored, you could create worlds together. Or if you just weren’t having it, he could talk about salmon with you. Over the years I, like many that knew him as a friend, had the great fortune of enjoying discourse in all three lanes with Phil on an almost daily basis. He was our treasure because he could navigate, support, civilly object to, and synthesize any topic of conversation across an impossibly wide range of importance. He could perceive the weight you gave to a subject and adjust his handling of it accordingly. He was a gentleman this way. Too often, good artists either lack the empathy to subject their work to the influence of their peers, or they lack the strength to remain true to themselves when they are so fully perceptive of those around them. Phil was the rarity among rarities that had the courage and talent to do both.

When he left us earlier this year, the feeling of loss at first stung with absoluteness. Then, from the folds of our minds and obscure crevices of the internet emerged strange, beautiful memories and truly great works of art that until now had been unseen and unheard. While the pieces within this collection are just one small representation of his catalog, they capture with great fidelity the spirit of our beloved friend. Our loss, therefore, is not total. For those that knew him and those that are just being introduced to him, Phil lives on in these pictures and sounds.'
